Kiwanis Independence Day 5K Benefits Camp Holiday Trails - 07/04/2018

The 35th Annual Kiwanis Independence Day 5K Race was held 7/4/18 starting at Hollymead Elementary School right across the parking lot from where we were last year at Sutherland Middle School in the Hollymead and Forest Lakes subdivisions.  292 folks ran, walked, and pushed strollers in support of Camp Holiday Trails, a local summer camp for kids with special health needs. Backpacks and supplies are donated at BB&T.Backpacks and supplies are donated at BB&T.


The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville is getting a big gift from a local bank.

BB&T Bank on Barrack’s Road is donating backpacks, blankets, stuffed animals, and other children’s supplies. It's an effort to help with the club's 'Cozy Comforts' kits that the organization presents to foster and adoptive care programs around the area.

The kits are given to kids as soon as they enter an agency’s care so that they can feel more at ease as they transition to a new home.

Jefferson Area Aktion Club Raises Funds at Innisfree MusicFest - 06/03/2018

Well over a hundred people braved the rains and floods and were welcomed to the second annual Innisfree Village Musicfest by the Jefferson Area Aktion Club on Sunday afternoon, June 3.  Members of the newest service leadership program sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville set up an ice cream stand at the entrance to the concert hall and, thanks to the generous financial support of Aetna and the volunteer efforts from Kiwanians, sold a variety of frozen treats to the many patrons who enthusiastically supported the efforts of the Aktion Club members, who also contributed to the success of the event by helping park cars..  Visitors enjoyed an afternoon...

Key Clubs End School Year with Honors Banquets - 05/24/2018

Key Clubs at Western Albemarle HIgh School and Albemarle High School ended the school year with gala awards banquets.  Kiwanians joined with faculty advisers, other school officials, as well as with parents and family members to celebrate the end of the school year and to congratulate the young servant leaders for their accomplishments.  The annual J. T. Graves Memorial Youth Scholarships went to Annesha Sarkar of AHS, Aleya Becker of Monticello High School, and Brooke Crouch of WAHS.  Western's Dana Raphael was awarded a special plaque recognizing her for her extraordinary achievements as Lieutenant Governor for Division 9A.   For more pictures of the WAHS...

Grand Home Furnishings Sports Equipment Drive Big Success - 05/02/2018

For the entire month of April., Kiwanis teamed up with Grand Home Furnishings and UVA Athletics to collect new and slightly used sports equipment to be donated by Kiwanis to various youth-based organizations that can use equipment for their participants.  The equipment had been collected by the store with the help of a media promotion on Saturday April 7 in conjunction with a gala opening of Grand's new "UVA Room."  The event was broadcast live by radio personality Pam Garrison of WCYK--99.7--Hip Country, who provided games, prizes, food and snacks.  After all was said and done, two huge furniture boxes jam packed...

The Kiwanis partnership with Ready Kids spans the entire history of our two organizations. Jefferson Area Aktion Club Beautifies Rivanna Trail - 04/17/2018

President Mark Millick led fifteen members of the Jefferson Area Aktion Club in a beautification project at Riverview Park on Tuesday, April 17.  Under the guidance of Chris Gensic director of Charlottesville Parks & Recreation, enthusiastic  Aktion Club members from the Virginia Institute of Autism's Adult Academy and from Innisfree Village prepared the ground on both sides of a stretch of the Rivanna Trail and spread wild flower seeds of about a dozen different varieties.  Chris invited the Aktion Club to return to the Park in about a month or so to admire the beautification they accomplished and perhaps spread seeds along a further stretch of the...
